Glasgow Music Festival March 2024

Added on 14 March 2024

On Saturday 9th March, sounds of tapping feet and clapping hands were heard throughout the day at the Renfield Centre, Bath Street, as the audience appreciated the effort and skills of the dancing teams participating in the 112th Glasgow Music Festival. In the morning session it was a pleasure to welcome back past schools from Glasgow and the Falkirk area and to welcome Castlehill Primary and St Mungo`s High School to the event for the first time. 7 teams in all, 2 schools withdrew (lack of numbers).   Enthusiastic pupils danced to the lovely music provided by Màrtainn Skene.
A carefully considered adjudication was provided by Les Lambert. Thank you to Maureen Daniel who had to scribe all the remarks quickly and accurately. St Mungo`s High School, St Andrew`s Primary and Comely Park Primary all competed for the Marion B Hamilton Certificate. By a narrow margin, scoring 88% for the dance “Hedwig`s Reel”, St Andrew`s Primary were presented with this certificate by Robert MacDonald, the current Hon. President of The Glasgow Music Festival and also a nephew of Marion Hamilton.

The Adult teams competed for the Glasgow Branch Quaich throughout the afternoon. Glasgow Dancers, Edinburgh University New Scotland Dance Society returned to the Festival and Dundee University Scottish Country Dance Society entered for the first time. The audience appreciated the high level of skills and precision demonstrated by all.
The Quaich was awarded to Glasgow Dancers for the square dance, “The New Petronella”, achieving a score of 90%.

My thanks to all entrants, the lively and encouraging audience, the Adjudicator, Scribe, Musician, Guests and most of all to the volunteer stewards who worked behind the scenes to support the pupils and the  smooth running of the Festival.

Please consider supporting the 2025 Festival, either by encouraging local schools to participate or by joining the audience, especially in the Afternoon sessions, to support the young adult teams….they are the future!
