Dancing with Scarecrows! Thur 18 Sept 2025
When Mickel SCD Club (one of our linked groups) was approached by Mearns House Care Home to provide a short ‘entertainment’ at their Autumn Fete, they didn’t want to miss the opportunity to share the fun and joy of Scottish Country Dancing with this local community group. Despite only having a few weeks’ notice, a team of volunteer dancers was organised – all of whom were members of RSCDS Glasgow Branch – and a programme of well-known dances was chosen namely Good Hearted Glasgow, Shiftin’ Bobbins and Mairi’s Wedding.
On Thursday 18th September the team arrived in good time to allow for a brief walk-through prior to the demonstration. The building was festooned in autumn colours and we were met by some very lively scarecrows (staff) and a celebratory atmosphere filled the home.
As we approached the room we were dancing in, we could see it was packed with residents, visitors and staff with lots more crammed in the doorway and others hoping to watch through the windows onto the corridor alongside. As soon as the music began, we were greatly encouraged by everyone cheering and clapping as we performed our three dances with some of the scarecrows wanting to join in! It was all over too soon and we received a great ovation from everyone there.
Many thanks to our dancers, Catherine, Alistair, Liz, Ken, Jane, Jim, Sheena and Anne for volunteering to dance at such short notice and particular thanks to Billy Gray who recorded the music for us.
