The Joys from Dancing
Added on 18 May 2025
As part of the Branch Outreach activities, a group of Branch dancers volunteered to entertain senior citizens at a Dementia friendly club at Thornliebank Parish Church on Sunday 18th May. It was great for us to demonstrate the joy we get from dancing but even better was when some of the audience participated in a St Bernard`s Waltz and the Gay Gordons at the end of the session. Much hilarity, chat and the sharing of experiences was done during and after the two dances.
Earlier in the afternoon we danced around the UK on a Virtual bus trip, visiting Glasgow (Good Hearted Glasgow), Ireland (Irish Rover), Wales (The Daffodil) London (Raven`s Dance), Lancashire, (Shiftin` Bobbins), returning to Glasgow in time for Mairi’s Wedding!
As a special treat Ken sang a super rendition of “Wee Jeannie McCall” giving a further opportunity for audience reflection and participation.
Both the dancers and the audience thoroughly enjoyed this dancing event, which was enhanced by super tunes from the accordionist Billy Gray.
The Church group invited us to stay for refreshments and a blether at the end of the afternoon. The memories of dancing whether at past social functions, school or weddings provided a real opportunity for us all to engage, enthuse, empathise and support each other.
My thanks to all of the Church organisers, Billy and the dance volunteers, namely Ken and Liz, Robert and Fiona, Elspeth, Laura, Jane and Debbie.
